The Rural and Urban Identities Blog is up! The site catalogs the collaboration between Karen Snouffer, Jenn Figg and Matthew McCormack. This work was made possible by a generous grant from the Great Lakes College Association's New Direction initiative.

The materials used are polycarbonate film, fiberglass screen, thread, acrylic paint, projection and sound.

Making of the Community Beacons

The human generated light from these Kinetic Light Cannons travels up to a mile! An eighteen inch woofer speaker creates the power for an ultra bright 1000 lumen LED. The barrels are made from recycled 55 gallon stainless steel barrels that were originally used to ferry lemon oil across the seas. Fresnel lenses focus and project the light out of the drum.

Forest Thrall at the Contemporary Arts Center of Virginia

This piece made in collaboration with artist Jenn Figg is incredible!
Our "Thrall" vine is 300 feet of twisted bent metal with 300 glass leaves- crawling and creeping over and around viewers in a 60 foot hallway. The installation will be on display until May 23 2010 at the CACV in Virginia Beach. The vine is featured right next to a display of Maurice Sendak's works including "Where the Wild Things Are" which is a stupid book with some good pictures.

Glass Dildo Chandelier

I am searching for any photos in history of a Glass Dildo Chandelier. I am working on a small scale Chandelier that I hope to display at the Princeton Club in Columbus Ohio.

This week the Ohio State Fair opens. I have both my glass light drums and thin blown mushrooms in the exhibition, the opening and award ceremony is July 28th.

Transduce Artist Statement

    We know energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be stored and transformed. The beauty we see in our natural world is based on plants transforming energy from radiant sunlight to physical growth. I use the stored plant energy to blow and sculpt glass. My fluid gestures, peaceful thoughts, and wild emotions are immediately and permanently captured in the piece. In this way, the glass objects are storage devices for my energy. Viewers today and in the future will transform the lines, colors, and texture of the work into their own real thoughts and feelings. When viewers explore my installations and physically interact with the kinetic work, they are accessing the same light energy that is the source of our existence. Through these shared experiences, I hope that our community will appreciate all life forms, people, and ideas.
